Is It Better to Use an Electric or a Manual Toothbrush?

Is It Better to Use an Electric or a Manual Toothbrush?

This is one of the very common question asked by my patients over the years of my Dental Practice.

To tell you the truth. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages.

Let’s start with electric tooth brush. It is most effective in removing the dental plaque/ food debris especially with patient with mobility disorders and patient wearing Orthodontic braces, has a timer, and it’s earth friendly. Where as downside, it’s expensive. It can range from $15 to $250 and if not used properly, can creates gum recession.

On a contrary, manual tooth brush is less expensive, so you can have few at any given time. It is very easily accessible. It’s very safe for young kids, but it could be less effective if patient does not use it with proper techniques. So, my advice is you can use either one, but remember this tip:

Tip- Brush your teeth at least twice a day for 2 minutes and replace the tooth brush head every 3 months.
